There is no daylight saving time in Hawaii

The Hawaiian Letters

Hawaii uses the Hawaiian alphabet as its writing system. Early in the nineteenth century, missionaries translated it from the English alphabet. The intention was to publish a bible that Hawaiians could read.

There are only 12 letters in the language: H, K, L, M, N, P, and W. The distinctive Hawaiian language has seven consonants and five vowels. Additionally, it has a symbol that, coincidentally, begins with the letter okina and is called "okina." A Hawaiian term can end with any one of five vowels.

It's likely that hibiscus flowers were in bloom all throughout Hawaii if you've ever there. Although Hawaii declared the hibiscus its national flower in the 1920s, it wasn't until 1988 that they settled on the hue—yellow.

The Hawaiian goose, Nene

Hawaii's national bird is Nene, also known as Branta sandwicensis. On May 7, 1957, it was designated as Hawaii's national bird. Mau'i, Kaua'i, and Hawai'i are the three of Hawaii's 137 islands where the bird can be found.

Surprisingly, Hawaii's state bird nearly became extinct in the 1950s when only 30 birds remained in existence. But because the species reproduced successfully in captivity, its numbers progressively increased until they reached about 500 birds by the early 2000s.

The Kae Lae, on Hawaii's Big Island, is as far south as one can go and is considered to be the southernmost point in the whole United States. Hawaiians call it Kae Lae, which means “the point.”

Technically, at least in accordance with official documents, the location is known as "South Point Complex." Swimming is not advised in the waters at the South Point due to the strong ocean currents, despite the stunning local scenery and fauna.

Steven Spielberg initially considered the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica when deciding on the site for this movie, but he ultimately preferred Hawaii because he was already familiar with this place.

Hawaii Is Where Surfing Began

In Hawaii, surfing has a rich history that dates back to the fourth century A.D. Polynesians from Tahiti and the Marquesas were the first to come to the Hawaiian Islands.

The Big Island of Hawaii is expanding each year

There are five volcanoes on Hawaii's Big Island. Lava occasionally erupts from the Klauea volcano, which is the most active of the five. Every year, these eruptions increase the island's entire landmass by about 42 acres. Ironically, what causes devastation also adds space to the world.

All of this new "land" is owned by the state of Hawaii, per local regulations. The establishment of these additional regions as national parks or nature reserves is only a matter of time.

Australia Is Where Macadamia Nuts Originate

Most souvenir shops in Hawaii sell such nuts, so if you've ever been, chances are good that you have. In actuality, these nuts are not indigenous to Hawaii. These nuts came from Australia and were introduced to Hawaii near the end of the 19th century.

In the 1920s, they achieved commercial success. Currently, Hawaii is home to eight processing facilities and 700 macadamia nut farms. Around 65 pounds of nuts are produced annually by a single macadamia tree.

The world's wettest region

Mount Waialeale, a volcano that is also the wettest site on earth, is situated on the second-highest point on the island of Kauai. The name, which means "rippling water" in Hawaiian, should have given it away if you were able to communicate in that language.

The annual average rainfall is roughly 373 inches at a height of 5,148 feet. The largest quantity of rainfall ever measured, averaging 683 inches, occurred in 1982.

Mount Haleakala on Maui, Hawaii, is the largest dormant volcano in the entire world

10,023 feet is the highest peak, and the summit crater measures 7.5 by 2.5 miles in size. The rest of the mountain, nevertheless, lies below sea level. If measured from the seafloor, Haleakala rises to a height of nearly 30,000 feet above sea level.

The first solo nonstop transatlantic flight, from Long Island, New York, to Paris, France, is primarily credited to Lindbergh. Lindbergh relocated to Maui and made his home there some 41 years later. Lindbergh eventually found simplicity and beauty in Maui and was buried there in Palapala Ho'omau Church.

Nicole Kidman was a Hawaii native

Nicole Kidman is simply one more well-known individual from Hawaii. While her Australian parents were in the US on a student visa, Kidman was born in Honolulu.

Since her father was a graduate student at the University of Hawaii in Mnoa, Kidman spent the first four years of her life there. Her mother at the time edited her father's works in addition to working as a nursing educator.

Ancient Church

The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, which was established in Honolulu in 1843, is the oldest Catholic church in existence in the entire country.

In an effort to promote peace after years of religious persecution in Hawaii during the missionary era, the church was constructed. There are two organs in the church, one of which was shipped all the way from France and the other from England.

Local People Are Not Called “Hawaiians”

Only people with Hawaiian ancestry can be referred to as "Hawaiians." Regardless of whether they were raised in Hawaii, non-Hawaiians are effectively referred to as locals.

If you're talking about the native people and culture of Hawaii, just refer to them as "Hawaiian." The phrase "local people" or "kamaaina" ("offspring of the land") is used to refer to non-Hawaiians.

The most deadly volcanic eruption in US history

The worst flood in US history is thought to have occurred in November 1790, during the Keanakakoi Eruption. On Mount Klauea's peak, it took place. As a result, the US experienced its deadliest volcanic outburst in history, killing about 400 people.

Famous footprints that were discovered close to the volcano are believed to be those of a family of women and children who fled the area during the eruption.

Pizza From Hawaii Is Not Hawaiian

Surprisingly, there is no connection between Hawaii and the so-called "Hawaiian" pizza. Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant to Canada in the 1960s, created this particular variety of pizza. It doesn't imply that Hawaiians don't prepare this well-known dish in their own unique way.

It is known as Kalua pork pizza and has pepper jack cheese, hoisin sauce, jalapenos, and some coriander along with bits of barbecued pork. Of course, each pizzeria has its own unique recipes (and toppings), and some employ a blend of specific herbs to give its pizza a distinctive flavor.
