50 truly interesting facts about Hawaii that you didn't know
14 Jul 2023What do we know about Hawaii? There are heavenly beaches and endlessly beautiful nature. We also know that the 44th president of the USA, Barack Obama, was born and raised on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. And also that the Hawaiian Islands are the most remote place on Earth where people live. But in addition to these facts, we found something to impress you! Believe me, you will be very surprised!
The way Hawaiian women wear flowers behind their ears has a hidden meaning
There is undoubtedly more going on when you see a perfect woman in Hawaii wearing a lovely bloom behind her ear—if you know the secret neighborhood code. She could be indicating to everyone in the area whether she is married or single.
Whether you wear the flower over your left or right ear depends on this. A woman who has a flower covering her right ear suggests that people find her approachable. She is considered taken when she wears the bloom over her left ear.
Hawaii is home to the largest banyan tree in the US
The famous Lahaina banyan tree, which was established in 1873, is now a huge banyan tree in the United States. When it was rooted, it was eight feet tall. It features a crown that is 225 feet wide (approximately 70 meters) and nearly 60 feet tall (18 meters).
The banyan's aerial roots produced 16 new trunks that support the tree's continued growth. It's quite an impressive sight, with hundreds of entwined trunks and roots stretching a quarter-mile in diameter.

Islands make up Hawaii
Only one state in the United States, Hawaii, is entirely made up of islands. It is referred to as an archipelago in the field of geography, which is Latin for “group of islands.”
Eight major islands (Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe) and 124 islets, reefs, and sandbars are among the 132 distinct islands that make up this state.

In Kauai, Hawaii, no structure may be taller than a palm tree
With a history dating back more than 6,000,000 years, Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. There, it is forbidden by law to build anything taller than a palm tree.
The Pacific Plate ignored a "area of interest," framing Kauai. Only the renowned Princeville Resort and the Kauai Marriott Resort—which operated before the bar was built—are excluded from this criterion.
The state fish of Hawaii is a reef triggerfish, known as humuhumunukunukupuaa
In 1984, the humuhumunukunukuapua'a—pronounce it as "who-moo-who-moo-noo-noo-koo-ah-ooo ah-ah"—was chosen as the state fish of Hawaii.
The humuhumunukunukuapua'a was chosen as Hawaii's official state fish for all time in 2006 because no one ran for re-election. The fact that the fish's name is longer than its 10-inch length is often made fun of by Hawaiians. By its name, one may infer “trigger fish with a pig's snout.”

The Unusual Astronauts Use Big Island for Training
Hawaii's Big Island is a really peculiar place. To prepare for their arrival on the moon on Hawaii's moonscape, space explorers travel to the Big Island, where the weather can be unpredictable.
The island is divided in half by the goliath-like volcanoes Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. It's interesting to note that the west and east sides have quite diverse and variable climates. The enormous mountains keep Kona's city-dominated west part of the island hot and dry like a desert. The town of Hilo is located on the east side, which is a wet wilderness with waterways and cascades.

In Hawaii, There Are Various Beach Colors
Hawaii is home to numerous seashores that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and most notably, colors. Each of these strikingly vivid coasts owes its individuality to the opposing arrangement of the tiniest particles that is any seashore's most conspicuous component: the sand.
When you think of Hawaii, you probably image a beach with white sand. They also come in black, red, yellow, and green colors. One of only four beaches with green sand in the world, Papakolea is located close to the southernmost point of Hawaii's Big Island.

It Is Impolite to Remove the Lei
When you step out of the plane and into Hawaii's humid outdoor air terminals, you can be greeted with a lei by the greeter. Important in Hawaiian culture are leis.
They once stood for status. However, these days they are mainly used for celebrations. Furthermore, refusing the sophisticated accessory if someone else offers it to you is impolite. It is rude to remove the lei for such a prolonged period of time while the moderator is in your presence. Avoid wearing it as a neckband that swings from the neck. A lei is designed to be worn dangling from one or both sides while being hung over the shoulders.
'Bad Luck' Volcanic Rocks Are Returned by Travelers to Hawaii
Generally speaking, neither Hawaii Volcanoes National Park nor Haleakala National Park permit the taking of mementos. However, it seems that most visitors disobey the rules and eagerly take pumice home.
In Hawaiian culture, it's illegal and regarded as impolite. Visitors gather volcanic rocks from Kilauea's liquid magma fountain. But every time, the officers of the Hawaii National Park claim that a lot of these stones were bad luck from Pele—the goddess of fire, dancing, lightning, volcanoes, and brutality—and they recover a lot of them.

Hawaiians Live Longer Generally
The state's medical services system, which focuses on preventive care and protects more than 90% of its residents, may be a contributing factor to the high life expectancy. Since 1975, businesses have been legally required to provide workers' compensation insurance for employees who put in more than 20 hours per week of work.
Hawaii has a greater life expectancy than various other US states, at 81.3 years. Hawaii's high standard of living could play a role in that.

The United States' sole palace in Hawaii
The only imperial castle in the country is Iolani Palace in Honolulu. It had electric lighting four years before the White House did.
King Kamehameha III built the original house on this property, which was rather modest, in the early 1845s. Later, additional kings used the house. It was replaced in 1882 by an American castle in the Florentine style for the final two monarchs of Hawaii, King Kalakaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani. The Iolani royal residence's first and second floors are now accessible to you.
In Hawaii, it's against the law to erect billboards
Hawaiians are concerned for both their nation and their Ohana. They have outlawed announcement notifications throughout the state because they need to have the choice to experience the majesty that the islands have to offer. For you, that is lucky.
The general coastlines of the islands may now be continuously viewed without being obscured by a Vegas-style light-up board. Strangely, three distinct states—Alaska, Vermont, and Maine—have all done the same, and collectively, they are the states with the best scenery in the nation.

In Kauai, Hawaii, There Are Cities That Are Illegal
This one is a little misleading. Urban communities are not prohibited on Kauai. However, they have outlawed the construction of buildings that are taller than a palm tree.
On Kauai, you won't be able to see the horizon because of this. Like any area on the island, it is difficult to reach. The modern port of Lihue is the only location that even resembles a city.

There is no daylight saving time in Hawaii
Hawaii is exceptional since it has its own time zone, known as Hawaiian Standard Time. Hawaii's long, lovely days can be ruined by sunlight reserve funds time, which can also make nightfall arrive unfavorably early.
As a result, Hawaii stopped observing Daylight Saving Time, joining the state of Arizona. American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico don't either.
The only US state to honor a king is Hawaii
America declared its independence and fought a progressive war against Britain's monarchy hundreds of years ago. Hawaii currently takes pleasure in having a government based on the majority rule philosophy, but it nevertheless honors a monarch. King Kamehameha Day is observed on the islands.
In the middle of the nineteenth century, he became the islands' monarch. Hawaiians acknowledge that Paiea Kamehameha's birth met their traditional expectation of a male who would overthrow all other leaders in Hawaii and become the best of all bosses.

Less Than 8,000 People Live on the Island of Molokai
The island of Molokai is wonderful. However, you won't find many places to enjoy while on vacation. By any stretch of the imagination, the structure is quite minimal.
This is so that a small group of people can live on a small island. In fact, you wouldn't even be able to find a stop sign. You'll be welcomed on the island with aloha if this sounds like an exceedingly relaxing getaway from the bustle around.

The Hawaiian Hula Dance is Open to Men and Women
The hula, which is Hawaii's traditional dance, evolved into narrative with innovations and serenades (mele) to honor the holy creatures. Many legends and tales were passed down orally from one generation to the next using hula techniques.
The dance typically starts with a mele, a serenade that tells the story and is always carried by a guy. At that point, women will typically take the lead and convey the rest of the plot through deliberate and sensual developments. That hasn't typically been the case, though.

Each Island's Different Colors and Flowers
Hawaii's islands each have their own particular flavor and bloom. Pink is Maui's real color, and the flower is called Lokelani (also known as Damask Rose). The yellow hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii.
The Ilima flower and the color yellow are symbols of Oahu. The lehua ohia flower and the Big Island of Hawaii's red color are its defining features. Kauai is symbolized by the color purple and the makhana (green berry). Niihau is symbolized by the pupu shell and the color white. Green color and white kukui blossoms are used to symbolize Molokai.
If you measure Mauna Kea in Hawaii from the base up, it is taller than Mount Everest
Whenever measured from its base on the ocean floor to its highest summit, Mauna Kea is taller than Everest. The most major observatory for optical, infrared, and submillimeter space science is located on the 4,200-meter-high culmination.
The height of Mauna Kea is 13,796 feet (4,205 meters) above the ocean, but its depth is 19,700 feet (6,000 meters). It is 4000 feet (1,200 meters) taller than Mount Everest at its full height of 33,500 feet (10,210 meters).

Both the highest and lowest temperatures have been recorded on the Big Island of Hawaii
The Big Island has experienced both the highest and lowest temperatures ever recorded in Hawaii, which is not unusual given the variety of landscapes on this particular island.
On the Big Island, April 27, 1931 in Pahala, the temperature reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the highest recorded value. On May 17, 1979, close to the summit of Mauna Kea, a temperature of 12 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded as the lowest ever.

In Hawaii, most sunscreens are prohibited
Hawaii does not require you to burn your skin in the intense tropical sun, but they do want to protect their fragile coral reefs. Oxybenzone and octinoxate, two synthetics frequently found in sunscreens, seriously harm coral reefs. That cannot exist in Hawaii. Since the law didn't go into effect until January 2021, vacationers had to stock up on sunscreen until the new year.
The width of Hawaii is greater than Texas, not its land mass
Hawaii, which stretches 1,523 miles from Niihau island to the Big Island, is the second-largest state in the union after Alaska. Hawaii is the second-fastest state in the union, behind Alaska, when measured from east to west.
That is more than twice as wide as Texas, to give you an idea of scale. Hawaii is vastly outclassed by Texas. Texas is roughly 678,052 sq km in size, compared to Hawaii's 16,635 sq km, making Texas 3,976% larger.

The Hawaiian Letters
Hawaii uses the Hawaiian alphabet as its writing system. Early in the nineteenth century, missionaries translated it from the English alphabet. The intention was to publish a bible that Hawaiians could read.
There are only 12 letters in the language: H, K, L, M, N, P, and W. The distinctive Hawaiian language has seven consonants and five vowels. Additionally, it has a symbol that, coincidentally, begins with the letter okina and is called "okina." A Hawaiian term can end with any one of five vowels.

Hawaii has a separate time zone
Hawaii has a legitimate justification for having its own time zone. When you stop to think about it, Hawaii has the most remote population in the entire planet due to its 2,400-mile distance from the nearest land mass, the US mainland.
Hawaii has its own time zone, dubbed Hawaii Standard Time, as a result. Hawaii is thus three hours later than the Pacific time zone.

Yellow hibiscus, or Pua Mao Hau Hele
It's likely that hibiscus flowers were in bloom all throughout Hawaii if you've ever there. Although Hawaii declared the hibiscus its national flower in the 1920s, it wasn't until 1988 that they settled on the hue—yellow.
Due to this, it's possible to find ancient Hawaiian postcards with red hibiscus blossoms. We believe they made a decent decision, don't you?
The Hawaiian goose, Nene
Hawaii's national bird is Nene, also known as Branta sandwicensis. On May 7, 1957, it was designated as Hawaii's national bird. Mau'i, Kaua'i, and Hawai'i are the three of Hawaii's 137 islands where the bird can be found.
Surprisingly, Hawaii's state bird nearly became extinct in the 1950s when only 30 birds remained in existence. But because the species reproduced successfully in captivity, its numbers progressively increased until they reached about 500 birds by the early 2000s.

Public and smoke-free beaches
Smoking is not permitted in state parks or on Hawaiian beaches as of 2015. E-cigarettes and tobacco products are prohibited in such areas. There were many Hawaiian cities and nearby parks at that time. Additionally, Hawaii raised the legal smoking age in the entire state to 21.
The Hawaiian Islands' entire coastline is accessible to the general public, with the exception of a few areas where the Federal Government is located. The high water mark is considered to be the end of the public shoreline. Beyond that point, the coastline can be private.

Hawaii Is Where Surfing Began
In Hawaii, surfing has a rich history that dates back to the fourth century A.D. Polynesians from Tahiti and the Marquesas were the first to come to the Hawaiian Islands.
They arrived with customs like board-surfing. In addition, there is undeniable evidence that Hawaii is where the contemporary sport of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) originated. The legendary sport was developed many years ago by the Waikiki beach guys. Big wave surfers from Maui, however, have just brought the sport back to life.
Formerly the largest pineapple supplier
Hawaii was the biggest producer of canned pineapple at one point in its history. According to estimates, Hawaii provided around 75% of the world's canned pineapple supplies, which peaked in the 1980s.
However, two of Hawaii's main producers of canned pineapples, Dole and Del Monte, left the state as the cost of producing pineapples in Asia decreased. Only 2% of the canned pineapple consumed worldwide is currently produced in Hawaii.

The Big Island of Hawaii is expanding each year
There are five volcanoes on Hawaii's Big Island. Lava occasionally erupts from the Klauea volcano, which is the most active of the five. Every year, these eruptions increase the island's entire landmass by about 42 acres. Ironically, what causes devastation also adds space to the world.
All of this new "land" is owned by the state of Hawaii, per local regulations. The establishment of these additional regions as national parks or nature reserves is only a matter of time.

Most souvenir shops in Hawaii sell such nuts, so if you've ever been, chances are good that you have. In actuality, these nuts are not indigenous to Hawaii. These nuts came from Australia and were introduced to Hawaii near the end of the 19th century.
In the 1920s, they achieved commercial success. Currently, Hawaii is home to eight processing facilities and 700 macadamia nut farms. Around 65 pounds of nuts are produced annually by a single macadamia tree.

The only US state where coffee is grown is Hawaii
Connoisseurs of coffee travel to the Hawaiian Islands to sample the delectable Kona Coffee. Contrary to popular belief, Kona coffee is farmed throughout the state, not just in and around Kona on the Big Island.
Leeward, a cruising phrase indicating the edge of an island least likely to experience a hurricane, corresponds to Kona. The temperature of each island is determined by the volcano in its center. Rain is pushed to one end of the island while the other is left dark because the peak gathers clouds and redirects wind.

In Hawaii, Hawaiian is the official language

Pizza From Hawaii Is Not Hawaiian
Surprisingly, there is no connection between Hawaii and the so-called "Hawaiian" pizza. Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant to Canada in the 1960s, created this particular variety of pizza. It doesn't imply that Hawaiians don't prepare this well-known dish in their own unique way.
It is known as Kalua pork pizza and has pepper jack cheese, hoisin sauce, jalapenos, and some coriander along with bits of barbecued pork. Of course, each pizzeria has its own unique recipes (and toppings), and some employ a blend of specific herbs to give its pizza a distinctive flavor.
